The ceremony which took place in Madrid brought together personalities from the world of politics, culture, sports and associations. The newspaper El Español handed its Lions to those who have embodied the values defended by the newspaper in 2022. Its director, Pedro J. Ramirez, the newspaper’s director, recalled these values: “freedom, justice, equality, sustainability, independence, fighting spirit and, finally, credibility.”

That is why Bernard-Henri Lévy, the director of the documentary film Why Ukraine, was awarded a Lion, which he shared with the women of Mariupol who supported the siege of Azovstal’s fighters and suffered Russian captivity.

Pedro J. Ramirez praised the courage of BHL, who he calls his “brave brother”, and “companion of forty years of journalistic adventures”. In particular, the director of El Español emphasized that, “with his intellectual dimension, his courage as a direct witness and his exciting narrative capacity, he has just set the United Nations on fire with his film Why Ukraine.”
